Linear and Non-Linear Storylines, and Single Camera Endings
A linear storyline is a storyline that progresses the story in a chronological order of events such as Game of Thrones. A linear storyline tells a straightforward story. Programs such as these would not utilise flashback or flashforward, or other techniques such as these.
A non linear storyline tells a story by flashing between different points of time to tell the story. Examples include The Affair, Sherlock and Pulp Fiction. Non linear storylines, would include uses of flashback and of flashforward, as well as other techniques.

Single Camera Endings
Single camera production endings, usually end with cliff hangers. This is because of the genres that single camera productions usually associate with like crime and thriller. Thus they end with the questions unanswered, so that people have to come and watch the next episode, or watch the next series. An example of this is Waterloo Road or Desperate House Wifes.
